The Object

A full chess set that lives on a bookshelf. Closed, it looks like a hardbound book with "CHESS" on the spine. The kind of thing guests notice but don't question. Open it, and the cover unfolds into an elevated chessboard. All 32 pieces sit in custom-moulded slots underneath. Board, pieces, storage. One object. Nothing loose. Nothing missing. Nothing to set up except the game itself.

How It Works

Open the book. The cover halves become the board, hinged, elevated, ready. Pieces lift out of labelled slots in the base, each one shaped to its silhouette so everything goes back exactly where it came from. Magnets in every piece and across the board keep the game steady mid-play. Done? Pieces back in their slots. Close the book. Back on the shelf.
